Insurance on the Texas Gulf Coast

For a Texas Gulf Coast property, begin by identifying which policy responds to which kind of damage. The home or business policy, wind and hail arrangements, and flood coverage may need separate attention. Whether you are buying, renewing or planning repairs, having those documents together makes it easier to ask the right questions before work or a policy change begins.

What do you need to insure?

Start with the property, vehicles, or operation you want to discuss.

Questions worth asking before you choose

Check wind and flood separately

Some coastal home policies exclude wind and hail, and most home policies do not cover flood damage. Ask the agent to identify any exclusions and explain the coverage arrangements for your exact address. Review each policy’s limits, deductible and effective dates. Do not assume a policy described as hurricane insurance addresses every type of storm damage.

Find inspection records before construction

If you need coverage through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, building-code compliance and certification may matter. TDI identifies inspections for many roof replacements, new buildings and major alterations in the designated coastal area. Ask about requirements before work starts and keep existing certificates with your property records. An inspection certificate is not an insurance policy, and it does not by itself confirm eligibility or coverage.

Connect property coverage with your recovery plan

For a shop, office or other business, list who owns the building, who owns the contents and what the lease requires. Ask what would happen to income and continuing expenses after a covered property loss. Business interruption depends on the policy’s covered causes and conditions. Bring separate wind or flood documents so those questions are considered with the rest of the business review.

Bring the details that matter

Have these ready when you contact us. We can help you work through what is missing.

  • Exact property address, building use, construction details and roof age.
  • Home or business, wind and flood declarations, including deductibles and renewal dates.
  • Available windstorm certificates and records of roof replacements or other major work.
  • For a business, the lease, contents values and a summary of ongoing expenses.
