The bakery you run

Tell us whether you bake on site, resell goods, make custom cakes or supply wholesale accounts. Include counter sales, production hours, food preparation and deliveries.

Add seating or serve a full food menu? Review coffee shop and cafe insurance alongside your production work.

Donut and pastry shops

Donut shops and pastry shops

Early production, proofing, frying and refrigeration can make a few pieces of equipment essential to opening each morning. Include fryers, ovens, proofers, hot oil, refrigerated fillings and your staff.

Describe what you make, from cake donuts and pastries to kolaches, and whether orders leave through the counter, wholesale accounts or deliveries. Home production needs a separate discussion; storefront guidance does not establish cottage-food eligibility.

Coverage to consider

Production equipment, stock and customers

Review what you produce, where it is sold and which equipment or ingredients could interrupt the next day's work.

Ovens, fryers and refrigeration

Commercial property may address covered damage to insured equipment and improvements. Mechanical or electrical breakdown is a separate question. Identify equipment values, ownership and the machines essential to production.

Stock and lost income

Spoiled ingredients, damaged finished goods and lost income during a closure have different causes and conditions. Check power failure, refrigeration failure, waiting periods, limits and restoration terms; damage coverage alone does not establish protection for every interruption.

Customers and wholesale orders

General liability may address covered customer injury or property damage. Describe retail and wholesale sales and food handling. Food illness allegations, product recall and dissatisfaction with a custom cake are separate questions.

Deliveries and staff

Identify staff, payroll, delivery drivers and vehicle ownership. Review workers compensation and relevant commercial auto or hired/non-owned liability. Vehicle liability does not automatically cover damage to the vehicle or goods it carries.

Cost and comparison

What affects bakery insurance cost?

Baking or frying, equipment and stock values, sales channels, payroll, deliveries and claims history affect the review. Limits, deductibles and lease or wholesale requirements also influence the quote.

A business owners policy may combine selected coverages if your bakery qualifies. Confirm production, wholesale sales and deliveries, with breakdown and spoilage reviewed separately.

Before you compare the price

  • Production and sales channels

Compare the same baking, frying, custom orders, retail sales and wholesale accounts.

  • Equipment and refrigerated stock values

Use consistent values for ovens, fryers, refrigeration, leased equipment and stock.

  • Staff and deliveries

Match payroll, roles, vehicle ownership and delivery arrangements.

  • Limits, deductibles and exclusions

Check covered causes and interruption terms alongside landlord or wholesale requirements.

Texas requirements

Lease, wholesale and delivery requirements

Landlords and wholesale customers may request particular limits or endorsements. Compare these requirements with the policy; a certificate cannot expand its terms.

Send the agreement so we can review contract and certificate requests. Describe deliveries and any responsibility for property belonging to others.

Home and cottage-food production follow a different set of rules from a storefront. Texas DSHS cottage-food guidance changed in September 2025. Check current permitted products, registration where required and sales restrictions with DSHS; an insurance policy does not establish permission to produce or sell food.

Texas Department of Insurance certificate guidance and Texas DSHS cottage-food guidance, checked October 7, 2026.

Words you will hear

Three terms to discuss in your review

Ask how these terms apply to the policy you are comparing.

Equipment breakdown

Review covered mechanical or electrical failure, the equipment scheduled and the applicable exclusions.

Spoilage

Protection for stock under specified causes and conditions, with limits. It is not the same as a food illness claim or product recall.

Business income

Specified lost income and expenses following a covered interruption, subject to waiting periods, limits and restoration terms.
