Medicare Supplement Plans in Texas

A Medicare Supplement policy, also called Medigap, helps pay some of the costs Original Medicare leaves to you. We are a local, independent agency in Madisonville, and a licensed agent can talk through your options with you by phone or across the desk.

Not connected with or endorsed by the U.S. Government or the Federal Medicare Program.

The basics

What a Medicare Supplement does

Original Medicare, Parts A and B, pays a large share of your hospital and medical costs. It also leaves some costs to you, like deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. A Medicare Supplement policy is private insurance that works alongside Original Medicare and helps pay some of those out-of-pocket costs.

With a Supplement you keep Original Medicare. You can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, anywhere in the country, without networks or referrals.

Standardized plans

Plans are standardized by letter

Medigap policies are standardized. A plan with a given letter offers the same basic benefits no matter which insurance company sells it. In most states, including Texas, there are ten plan types, named by the letters A through D, F, G, and K through N.

Because same-letter plans match on benefits, price is the main difference between companies. That is exactly the kind of comparison an independent agency is built for.

Know the difference

A Supplement is not Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, takes a different path. Advantage plans are Medicare-approved plans from private companies that combine your Part A and Part B coverage, and most of your care then runs through that plan instead of Original Medicare. A Medigap policy cannot be used with a Medicare Advantage plan. You choose one path or the other.

We sell Medicare Supplements. We do not sell Medicare Advantage plans, and this page is not an offer of one. If you want to see every option in your area, Medicare.gov and 1-800-MEDICARE list them all.

Timing

When you can enroll

Timing matters more with Medigap than with most insurance. These are the windows Medicare itself describes.

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period

A six month window that starts the first month you have Medicare Part B and are 65 or older. During it you can buy any Medigap policy sold in Texas, and the company cannot deny you coverage because of health problems.

After the window closes

You can still apply, but acceptance and pricing can work differently. Talking through your timing before the window closes is worth a phone call.

New to Medicare

Enrollment in Medicare itself happens through Social Security, starting three months before you get Part A or Part B. Once Part B begins at 65 or older, your Medigap window begins with it.

Drug coverage

Medigap does not include drug coverage

Medicare drug coverage, Part D, comes from separate private plans. Medigap policies do not include it. We do not sell Part D plans; Medicare.gov and 1-800-MEDICARE can show you every drug plan in your area and how enrolling late can affect cost.

Common questions

Medicare Supplement questions we hear

What does a Medicare Supplement actually pay for?

It helps pay some of the costs Original Medicare leaves to you, like deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. What a given plan letter covers is standardized, so the same letter means the same basic benefits from any company.

Can I have a Medicare Supplement and a Medicare Advantage plan?

No. A Medigap policy cannot be used with a Medicare Advantage plan. You keep Original Medicare with a Supplement, or you move your coverage into an Advantage plan. We sell Supplements and can explain the difference plainly.

When can I buy a Medicare Supplement in Texas?

Any time a company will accept your application, but the six month Medigap Open Enrollment Period that starts with Part B at 65 or older is the window when no company can turn you down for health reasons. Timing your application around that window matters.

Does a Medicare Supplement include prescription drug coverage?

No. Drug coverage is Medicare Part D and comes from separate plans. We do not sell Part D; Medicare.gov and 1-800-MEDICARE list every drug plan available in your area.

Do I have to use certain doctors?

No. With Original Medicare plus a Supplement you can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, anywhere in the United States. There are no networks or referrals.

Does it cost anything to talk to you?

No. Call the office, ask your questions, and take whatever time you need. If a Supplement fits, we help with the application. If it does not, you will know more than when you called.
