Boat Insurance in Texas

Between the lakes and the coast, Texas is a boat state, and a lot of boats are riding on a false assumption: that the homeowners policy has it handled. It mostly does not. We are a local, independent agency, and we can set up coverage that actually fits the boat, the trailer, and the water you use them on.

The gap

What your homeowners policy actually does for a boat

Most homeowners policies will cover damage to a boat, but only up to a limited dollar amount, and they provide no liability coverage on the water. A trolling motor jon boat might live comfortably inside those limits. A bass boat, a ski boat, or anything with real value and real speed does not, and the liability gap is the part that can reach your savings.

A boat policy exists to close both gaps: real coverage for the boat itself, and liability for what happens on the water.

The fine print that matters

How a policy values your boat

Replacement cost

Pays to repair or replace the boat. The strongest protection, usually for newer boats.

Actual cash value

Pays to repair or replace minus depreciation. Cheaper, and the difference shows up at claim time on an older boat.

Agreed amount

You and the company set the boat's value up front, and a total loss pays that number. Worth discussing for boats that hold value.

Beyond the hull

Policies can add medical payments and cover damage or injuries to others. The motor, the trailer, and the gear aboard each deserve a question of their own.

Texas water

Lakes, coast, and the months between

Where and how you boat shapes the policy: a lake boat that sleeps on a lift, a bay boat trailered to the coast a few weekends a year, a sailboat in a slip. Trailering is part of the conversation too, because the road to the ramp has its own risks and your auto policy and boat policy need to meet cleanly in the middle.

Tell us how the boat actually gets used and stored. That five minute conversation is the difference between a policy that fits and one that just exists.

What to have ready

Start with what you know. We will work through the rest.

  • Year, make, model, and length of the boat, and the motor
  • Where it lives: trailer, lift, slip, or storage
  • The water you use most: lakes, bays, or offshore
  • Your current policy, if the boat has one

Common questions

Boat insurance questions we hear

Does my homeowners policy cover my boat?

Usually only a little. Most homeowners policies cover boat damage up to a limited dollar amount and provide no liability coverage. A boat of any real value needs its own policy.

What is the difference between actual cash value and replacement cost?

Replacement cost pays to repair or replace the boat. Actual cash value subtracts depreciation first, which on an older boat can be a big subtraction. Agreed amount sets the number up front. Which one your policy uses is worth knowing before a claim.

Is the trailer covered?

Not automatically. The boat, the motor, and the trailer can each be handled differently, and the drive to the ramp involves your auto policy too. We make sure the pieces meet without a gap.

What about my gear and electronics aboard?

Fishing gear, electronics, and equipment can be covered, with limits that vary by policy. If there is real money in the rod locker and the console, say so when we quote.

Does the boat need coverage in the off season?

Theft, fire, and storm damage do not wait for summer, and a boat on a trailer beside the house is exposed to all three. Dropping coverage in winter saves a little and risks a lot; let us look at the numbers together.

Can you quote the boat with our other policies?

Yes. We are an independent agency and compare options from multiple companies. Sometimes the same company for home, auto, and boat works out best; sometimes it does not. We will tell you which plainly.
