Freestone County flood-map status
FEMA’s new countywide flood maps for Freestone County took effect June 10, 2026, after preliminary maps issued July 12, 2024 and a Letter of Final Determination dated December 10, 2025. The study covers unincorporated Freestone County, Fairfield, Teague, Wortham, Kirvin, Streetman and Oakwood, and FEMA’s services showed no open preliminary map or Letter of Map Revision as of October 29, 2026. Because the maps are new, a property’s flood zone may have changed since its last policy.
- The National Flood Insurance Program had about 34 policies in force in Freestone County as of September 2026, covering about $10.6 million; 17 claims since 1978 have paid about $587,000. Most of that claim history sits in ZIP 75860 (Teague) and ZIP 75840 (Fairfield).
- FEMA's flood take-up data has no mapped high-risk zone count for the county, so check a property's zone by address.
- Streetman does not take part in the National Flood Insurance Program, so no federal flood policy can be written for an address there; ask us about private flood coverage.
Our county graphic is a community locator. Flood zones alone do not establish coverage or premium.

PPC fire rating & territory
PPC (Public Protection Classification) can affect home and business insurance prices.
- Territory
- Rated fire-service boundary and recognized automatic aid.
- Station
- Road miles to a recognized fire station.
- Water supply
- Distance to a creditable hydrant or other water supply.
Response areas are approximate, not verified PPC territories. Ask us to confirm your property’s PPC and territory; premium impact varies by insurer.

Straight-line winds, the Dew tornadoes and home repairs
NWS Fort Worth surveys documented downburst and straight-line winds of about 78 mph along a line from south of Fairfield toward Buffalo on June 21, 2023, with trees uprooted along I-45 and roof damage in Teague and Donie the same afternoon, and two EF-0 tornadoes near Dew on April 28, 2024 that damaged trees and one home’s roof. FEMA’s May 2024 storm declaration and its Hurricane Beryl declaration both named the county, and the Texas GLO’s 2024 Disasters action plan lists Freestone as a Secondary MID county.
After repairs, share work dates, invoices, unfinished work and changes in occupancy or building use.
- National Weather Service records for 2016 to 2025 list 4 tornadoes in Freestone County (strongest EF0), hail of 1.75 inches or larger on 4 days, a peak thunderstorm gust of 90 mph, 12 flash floods and 3 winter or ice storms.

Plain answers
Freestone County insurance questions
Can you compare insurance companies in Fairfield or Teague, TX?
Yes. As an independent agency, we compare options from more than one insurance company for farm and ranch, home, mobile home and auto coverage. TDI’s home insurance guide notes that each company has its own underwriting rules and rates, so one may offer a policy when another won’t. You can work with us by phone or online from Fairfield, Teague, Wortham or anywhere in Freestone County, TX.
Do I need farm insurance for my land in Freestone County?
It depends on how you use the land, not the number of acres. Most farmland in Freestone County is pasture, about 259,000 acres in the 2022 Census of Agriculture, so cattle, horses, fences and hay barns are the usual starting points. Tell us about the home, animals, equipment, leases, sales and visitors, and we can compare farm and ranch insurance options, including farm liability.
38 percent of Freestone County's 1,291 farms are under 50 acres (2022 Census of Agriculture), the size range where a hobby farm policy often fits better than a standard homeowners form.
What if I lease pasture or use equipment away from the property?
Bring the locations, ownership or lease details, equipment list and activities for a farm and ranch insurance review. Do not assume that a home or farm policy automatically covers every location or use.
Farms in Freestone County hold machinery and equipment valued at $119.7 million (2022 Census of Agriculture); a barn's contents can be worth more than the building.
Does homeowners insurance cover water damage in Freestone County?
It depends on where the water comes from. Policies usually cover sudden water damage, like a burst pipe, but not a leak that went on for weeks, wear and tear or flooding. Water damage made up 18 percent of the homeowners losses insurers paid in Freestone County in 2025, according to TDI. TDI’s home insurance guide also notes that your first two appliance-related water damage claims don’t count once the damage is fixed and passes inspection. Tell us your home’s age and plumbing, and we can compare home insurance options.
Can you review a business operated from my home?
Yes. Tell us what the business does, who visits, and what property and vehicles are involved. The business insurance review should consider the operation and the policy terms rather than assume that a home policy is enough.
Do I need flood insurance in Freestone County?
It depends on the property and the mortgage. If you have a government-backed mortgage on a property in a high-risk flood zone, flood insurance is required, and most home policies don’t cover flooding. FEMA’s new countywide flood maps for Freestone County took effect June 10, 2026, so check your address on FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center to see whether its zone changed. Inside Streetman, TX, federal flood policies aren’t sold: FEMA’s Community Status Book lists the city as not taking part in the national flood program, so ask us about private flood coverage there. A new flood policy usually takes effect 30 days after you buy it.
Can I insure a manufactured home in Freestone County?
Yes. Manufactured homes are common in Freestone County and are usually insured on their own policy rather than a standard homeowners form. Price and coverage depend on the home’s year, size, tie-downs and setup and whether it sits on land you own. Tell us those details, and we can compare mobile home insurance options.
Should I carry uninsured motorist coverage in Freestone County?
It’s worth a close look. TDI’s auto insurance guide says insurance companies must offer uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, and you must reject it in writing if you don’t want it. As of August 31, 2026, TexasSure could not match 9.3 percent of Freestone County’s liability-required vehicle registrations to an insurance policy. Tell us about your vehicles and drivers, and we can compare auto insurance options.
